What is on this page

Every sheet here is a full A4 coloring page where each closed region carries a small printed number, and the key along the bottom names which color that number wants: 1 might be red, 2 orange, and so on. Fill every region with its color and a finished picture appears. Each puzzle comes as a free PDF, and the completed picture ships as a separate answer page, so you can check the result or just enjoy knowing how it should turn out. Nothing needs an account and nothing carries a watermark.

What is a color by number printable?

A color by number printable is a line drawing whose closed regions are numbered, plus a key that assigns one color to each number. Instead of choosing colors freely, you decode the key and color each region as instructed, and the picture only looks right if every number was read correctly. It is a coloring page with a solving step built in.

How the three levels differ

The levels are real differences in the sheet, not labels on the same drawing:

Every card states the exact region and color count for its sheet, measured from that drawing rather than estimated, so you can judge the work before spending the ink.

Every region holds a number, and the numbers stay readable

The quiet failure of most color by number pages is a region too small for its own numeral, so the number either overflows into the neighboring shape or is left out entirely, and the child has to guess. The sheets here are built the other way round: each drawing was measured region by region, the numeral is placed at the widest point of its region and scaled to it, and a drawing where any region could not hold a readable number did not make the page. Tiny details like eye sparkles are filled in as line work instead of being numbered, exactly the way printed coloring books handle them.

What the numbers practice

Digit recognition first: the sheet only works if 6 and 9 are told apart, and unlike a worksheet, the reward for reading the digit right is a crayon rather than a tick. Under that sits matching, holding a rule in mind while scanning for every region that obeys it, which is the same move as reading a map legend. And under everything sits the usual coloring work of keeping a crayon inside a line. The easy sheets ask about twenty decisions; the hard ones close to fifty.

Printing them

Set scaling to 100 percent or actual size rather than fit to page; every sheet already carries a 15mm margin, which is also why the A4 files print on US Letter without cropping. Print the puzzle page in black and white at normal quality. The one thing these pages want that the rest of this site does not is color for the KEY swatches, but the key also spells each color out in words, so a black and white print still works fine: the words carry the information and the swatches just make it faster.

The answer pages

The answer download shows the same drawing fully colored according to the key. Hand a child the puzzle without it, or print both and let them check their own work at the end, which for this kind of puzzle is half the fun. If you are printing for a group, the puzzle in bulk plus one answer page for yourself is the economical set. Each description ends with a puzzle number that identifies that exact sheet permanently, so a sheet that worked well is easy to find again.

How to use these sheets

  1. Pick a sheet and press Print. The file is a PDF sized for A4 and Letter paper.
  2. Print it in black and white at normal quality. None of these sheets need colour ink except the colour by number pages.
  3. Keep the answer page for yourself, or print it too if you want to check the work later.
