What "easy" means here

Every puzzle on this page starts with around 42 of the 81 squares already filled. That is roughly half the grid, and it is the single number that makes a sudoku easy or hard. Nothing else about the rules changes.

At that clue count you can normally finish the whole grid using one technique: pick a digit, look at a box, and cross off every row and column that already contains that digit. Often only one square is left, and it goes there. Repeat around the board and it unwinds.

Who these suit

Anyone learning sudoku, anyone returning to it after a long gap, and anyone who wants a puzzle that finishes in ten or fifteen minutes rather than becoming a project. They are also a reasonable first sudoku for a child of about eight or nine who is comfortable with numbers to nine, because a puzzle at this density rewards steady looking rather than clever deduction.

What the numbers on each card tell you

Beyond the clue count, each description carries two measurements taken from that specific board:

How many blank squares already accept only one digit. This is your opening. A board with a dozen of these will feel immediately satisfying; one with fewer needs a little more scanning before it opens up.
How few clues the barest row was left with. Useful as a warning: start with the fullest row, not that one.

These are measured on each grid rather than estimated, which is why they differ from puzzle to puzzle even though the clue count is the same.

No guessing, ever

Each puzzle here has exactly one solution, verified before it was published. The grid is dug out of a complete solved board one square at a time, and a square is only left blank if the puzzle still solves uniquely without it. So if you find yourself about to guess on an easy sudoku, the puzzle is not the problem: there is a deduction available somewhere on the board.

The answer sheet is a separate download, so you can check yourself at the end without the solution sitting next to you the whole time.

When to move up

If you are finishing these without needing to write any candidate notes in the margins, go to the main sudoku page for the medium boards at around 33 clues. That is where noting candidates starts to matter, and it is a much smaller jump than going straight to the hard set at 26.

Printing

Choose 100 percent or "actual size" rather than "fit to page", so the squares stay big enough to write in. The 15mm margin is already built into the page, so an A4 file prints on US Letter without losing anything. Black and white, normal quality.
