Flowers

Carnation, bluebell, lily on its stem, rosebud, tall sunflower, tulip and daffodil. Most are joined from 58 dots; the daffodil uses 49. The tulip and the rosebud are the gentlest, with 7 and 8 sharp corners, while the ring of petals on the tall sunflower forces 25. Pencil paths run from about 247 mm on the daffodil to 402 mm on the sunflower.

Autumn leaves

A single maple leaf, a spray of maple leaves, leaves in the wind and an autumn leaf. Every lobe and stalk is a corner, so this is the most angular group: the spray reaches 32 sharp turns over about 449 mm, the longest path on the page. Cats and butterflies

A swallowtail butterfly, a chrysalis on a twig, and Siamese, Maine Coon and Sphynx cats. The cats are the smoothest outlines in the collection: the Sphynx turns sharply only twice and the Siamese four times. The butterfly and the chrysalis use the full 58 dots and travel close to 400 mm, so they take longer despite only 10 to 12 corners.

Fifty-odd dots and a longer line

All 70 sheets on this page sit at the hard tier, where each outline gets up to 58 dots. A few subjects close with fewer because their shape needs fewer points: the daffodil and the leaves in the wind stop at 49. The pencil travels between about 247 mm and 449 mm per picture, so one sheet fills a few calm minutes. They suit adults and older children who count past fifty without thinking and would like the challenge to sit in the hand.

Is a dot to dot for adults harder because of the dots or the corners?

Mostly the corners. Nearly every sheet here has the same number of dots, so the count of sharp turns is what separates them. The Sphynx cat turns sharply twice and flows like one long curve; the spray of maple leaves turns 32 times and makes you stop and change direction again and again. Check that figure on the card first.

Flowers, leaves, cats or creatures

Start with the cats if you like smooth, rounded lines: the Siamese, the Maine Coon and the Sphynx have the fewest sharp corners in the set. The flowers sit in the middle, with the tulip and the rosebud gentle and the tall sunflower spiky at 25 turns. The autumn leaves are the jagged group, because every lobe of a maple leaf is a corner. In the last group the little dragon matches the sunflower with 25 turns, while the T. rex and the velociraptor stay at 12 each.

How the adult set differs from its neighbors

The main dot to dot collection mixes three tiers, so a 58-dot sheet there sits beside pictures of about 22 and 38 dots meant for younger counters. Here every sheet is on the top rung of that ladder. Printing and checking the finished outline

Each PDF opens with one A4 vector page of numbered dots and no guide line; the preview on the card joins the outline only so you can recognize the subject. The joined picture is the last page of the same file. Print at actual size or 100 percent. Skip fit to page. The 15 mm margin lets the A4 file run on US Letter as well. A sharp pencil or a fine pen keeps each number beside its dot readable. Each description ends with a puzzle number, so you can find the same sheet again.

How to use these sheets

  1. Pick a sheet and press Print. The file is a PDF sized for A4 and Letter paper.
  2. Print it in black and white at normal quality. None of these sheets need colour ink except the colour by number pages.
  3. Keep the answer page for yourself, or print it too if you want to check the work later.
